This piece deals with the idea of representation using the rational context through a chinese ideogram and a photographic portrait. The piece makes a non figurative self-portrait over a figurative background by excellence – the photographic portrait. I use the capacity that the symbol has to extern and idea in an abstract manner, legible thanks to the social convention that is writing, it is a pictogram with its own meaning; and at the same time I use the figurative forcefulness of photography to create a juxtaposition in the visual language of the duality between abstraction/figuration .
Since the piece is constructed with these elements the symbol becomes the main character in the reading of this piece: the ideogram of my name is the graphic representation not only of the word ‘Fung’, but also the idea of my personal identity. And while all of this is created with the element of my image as a background it becomes a double representation: as abstract as it is figurative, an abstract self portrait over a figurative background, a complete portrait or an absurd representation.
